“Illegal dumping of rubbish and household items is a widespread issue in rural areas. Besides
being unsightly, illegal dumping can result in damage to the environment and wildlife or can cause health issues to livestock if it occurs on grazing property.

Illegal dumping is a costly crime, with local councils spending millions of dollars each year collecting and correctly disposing of the rubbish.

Although fines for illegal dumping have increased in an attempt to curb this behaviour, the number of reports of this crime has not reduced, but in fact, increased as well.

This may be due to the fact that the perpetrators are rarely caught in the act and are hard to track down afterwards.

Some of the most commonly dumped objects are disused whitegoods and old car bodies which can often be disposed of at the local council tip for no charge, which makes illegal
dumping an incredibly senseless crime."

"Counting sheep is not an unusual process for farmers. Counting sheep is almost therapeutic.

The rushed headcount of sheep bounding by. Count by 2s, count by 1s, count 1 as 3 and multiply the choice is yours - the only requirement - you have to get it right!

A calm sense arises when the numbers match up but a sense of unease and trepidation, an unknown sense of something wrong appears when the numbers don’t match.

Stock theft is no joke, imagine taking the hard work and livelihood of someone else - do they feel guilty, do they have an unsolved problem, an urge to steal, a need to act criminally?

What happens if that was their stock, their livelihood, their passion? It’s greedy, it’s unjust and it’s despicable for them to go about their day knowing that they have committed unjust crimes."

Photographers have had their say on what constitutes rural crime in a photo competition run by @uninewengland. Now the judges are inviting the public to pick a winner.

An expert judging panel has chosen images of a mob of sheep in the eerie twilight, dumped broken goods, and a rusted car as the major prize winners of the Rural Crime and Law Photo Competition run in April, aimed at capturing issues and perceptions around rural crime. These winners also join other entrants in the running for the People’s Choice Award.

It’s one of the most common and costliest threat

It’s one of the most common and costliest threats facing Australian farmers – but stock theft could soon be on the decline with the help of a new digital defence.

The Centre for Rural Criminology @uninewengland will next month conduct a world-first trial to test the crime prevention capability of a new smart solar-powered animal ear tag developed in Australia by Queensland agricultural technology company @ceres_tag.

Stock theft is a serious problem all around the world, including right here in Australia. With food insecurity and ballooning prices, the problem is only likely to increase 📈

One of the primary issues in rural crime, and with stock theft specifically, is that, unlike in the city, there are few 👀 or 'capable guardians' to prevent the theft 👮🚔

In crime prevention terms, this means stock theft is often a high reward and low risk offence: 🐄 = 💰💵

Technology is offering new tools to help turn the tables on offenders. One of these technologies is @ceres_tag, a direct to satellite 'smart' eartag 📡

Ceres Tag uses data collection and on-tag analytics to provide animal-specific geospatial location data in addition to movement and animal health monitoring 🎯

What could this mean for crime prevention? Well, farmers may be quickly alerted to the theft of stock, allowing the opportunity for swift intervention, and stolen stock can be tracked and recovered 🧑‍🌾👩‍🌾

Watch this space! The Centre for Rural Criminology @uninewengland is currently undertaking a live trial evaluation of Ceres Tag for the prevention and reduction of stock theft 🔍
